Project

I was hired by Avionte to help establish a product and user experience design division for their organization. Their staffing software was originally a remote desktop application and they were now moving it to a SaaS-based platform. During this transition, Avionte wanted to rethink its current user experience and find ways to improve its product overall.

Understanding the Users

At Avionte, they had an extensive list of clients eager to participate in any user research. Several staffing firms invited my team and me to shadow and interview their employees to gain a deeper understanding of the pain points that their clients experience when using Avionte's software. To help explain the opportunities Avionte has to improve its software and user experience, I started by creating a variety of user personas. I also made a comprehensive journey map that was used in presenting to the product team, leadership team, and venture capitalists the opportunities Avionte has to improve its software.

An Application Upgrade

The biggest challenge I faced was leading my team to redesign their back-office software in order to make it compatible with a new cloud-based system. I saw it as an opportunity to upgrade the outdated software design as well as to implement best practices for user experience in a more efficient manner.

It's All About the Search

In developing a better user experience in Avionte's software, I found that the search function was one of the software's biggest challenges. After conducting user interviews, there was a pattern of users stating that they only used the Quick Search feature because the main search field was too complex to find what they needed quickly. After looking at the feature usage rate with Pendo's software analytics, I confirmed that the Quick Search was the most used feature in the software, with 90% of users using it rather than utilizing the primary search function. I began exploring design options to see how the software could switch the 'Quick Search' to be the primary search field in the software, with advanced search filtering being secondary.
