SCOPE

Role-based dashboards, Whole Student Profile, N.O.R.A. AI assistant, product roadmap

THE PROBLEM

Schools drowning in disconnected data — while students fall through the cracks.

K–12 school districts use dozens of tools — visitor management, behavioral case management, digital threat detection, emergency systems, attendance trackers — but these systems were never designed to work together. The result: educators spend hours manually piecing information together at the exact moments when they need to act fast.

Critical signals get buried. Early warnings go unnoticed. Students who need intervention don't get it in time. NavigateOne was built to solve this problem at the root — by bringing every relevant signal into one unified, intelligent experience.

Foundational pillars: Clarity Across Systems, Connected Student Story, Earlier Insight

WHAT EDUCATORS TOLD US

The problem wasn't the absence of data. It was the absence of clarity.

Before a single wireframe was drawn, I led a research program with district leaders, principals, counselors, and security directors across the country. These quotes — from real people by name — drove every design decision that followed.

"Right now we are pulling from so many different systems. It slows everything down."

Brian Harris

Security Director, Williamsport Area School District

"We spend a lot of time trying to make sense of data that is scattered everywhere."

Dr. Brandon Pardoe

Director of Student Services, Birmingham School District

"I kind of have the data I need, but it is all small picture. It takes forever to pull things together."

Cassandra Andrews

Application Manager, IDEA Public Schools

"I love that a bunch of different data points will come together in one place so we can actually make heads or tails of it."

Dr. Brandon Pardoe, Director of Student Services, Williamsport Area School District

STRATEGIC FOUNDATION

Three pillars that shaped every product decision.

01

Clarity Across Systems

Educators work in too many disconnected tools. Critical information becomes scattered, patterns get missed, and time is lost. A unified platform brings everything together so teams can see what is happening and act with confidence.

02

A Connected Story of Student Needs

Behavior, safety, attendance, and well-being cannot be understood in isolation. Districts need a single place where these signals blend into a complete picture — allowing consistent, proactive response before issues escalate.

03

Earlier Insight, Stronger Intervention

When information lives in separate systems, early warning signs go unnoticed. Unified data and AI-driven indicators surface important changes sooner — giving educators the chance to intervene before outcomes are determined.

ALPHA PROGRAM

Built with real district insight, not assumptions.

The Alpha Program brought together principals, counselors, district leaders, and school safety staff from across the country. They reviewed early concepts, tested workflows, and gave honest feedback on what worked and what created friction. This research grounded every design decision in real practice — not internal assumptions.

Teams miss early signs because information is spread across disconnected tools

Data fragmentation creates hidden risks — critical changes in student behavior go unnoticed when no single view exists. This finding drove the entire unified-platform architecture.

Districts don't need more data. They need insight that highlights what changed.

Alpha participants pushed back on dashboard-first thinking. They wanted clear signals about what mattered now — not more widgets to interpret. This shaped how NORA's AI insights were prioritized.

Principals, counselors, and safety teams each have fundamentally different needs

Role-specific views were non-negotiable. Designing one "dashboard for everyone" would have served no one well. The platform needed to present different stories from the same underlying data.

Usability and speed are the primary drivers of adoption

"If it takes too long to find what I need, I stop using it." This feedback from multiple participants reinforced a clear hierarchy: clarity over comprehensiveness, and speed over feature count.

MY ROLE

Director of UX & Product Design

The work on NavigateOne began with a simple goal: give educators a clear view of what is happening with their students so they can act sooner and with more confidence. Reaching that goal required more than design ideas or internal assumptions. It required listening to the people who face these challenges every day.

The Alpha cohort shaped every major part of the product. They pointed out where the Student Snapshot needed clearer indicators. They asked for streamlined dashboards that match the way principals and counselors actually work. They helped refine early warning signals, reduce noise, and focus on the patterns that matter. Many of the most important improvements came directly from their suggestions and real examples from their schools.

A connected platform is only as strong as the insight that guides its design. The most valuable decisions came from conversations about day-to-day experiences, the barriers users face, and the support they need.

ALPHA PROGRAM

What changed when we listened.

The earliest versions of NavigateOne changed quickly as Alpha districts surfaced pain points and told us what mattered most. These before/after examples show the most meaningful shifts — each driven by specific user feedback, not internal preference.

NavigateOne Student Profile — aggregating behavioral, attendance, engagement, and safety signals into one view for any staff member

Security Director Dashboard

Security Director Dashboard — before (left): static listing with no urgency hierarchy / after (right): active alarms surface immediately, safety compliance and threat level at a glance

BEFORE — WHAT USERS TOLD US WAS WRONG

  • Hard to see risk levels across campuses at a glance — no visual hierarchy for urgency

  • Too many separate widgets competing for attention without clear prioritization

  • No quick way to compare compliance or drill status across buildings

  • Dashboard listed information but didn't help directors make faster decisions

AFTER — WHAT THE REDESIGN DELIVERED

  • High priority alerts
    moved to top

— active alarms, planned drills, and threat levels immediately visible

  • School-specific safety compliance

— scan compliance, drill completion, and overdue items in seconds

  • Stronger visual hierarchy

— information organized by urgency so patterns and outliers stand out

  • A clearer district-wide story

— state of safety readiness across all schools without switching systems

Principal Dashboard

nav-principal-before-after.png

Principal Dashboard — before (left): useful data but no urgency signals or student risk indicators / after (right): students needing check-ins surfaced, attendance trends compared year-over-year, drills with weather context

BEFORE — WHAT USERS TOLD US WAS WRONG

  • Student risk indicators were missing or buried — principals couldn't identify who needed attention that week

  • Attendance trends lacked year-over-year comparison, making change invisible

  • Drills had no weather context — a scheduling factor that matters in practice

  • Dashboard showed data but not the story behind it

AFTER — WHAT THE REDESIGN DELIVERED

  • Students to check in with this week

— emerging concerns surfaced from attendance, behavior, and engagement

  • Drills now include weather

— principals can adjust scheduling without switching tools

  • Year-over-year attendance comparison

— clear week-by-week trend to spot shifts faster

  • Behavior incidents by severity

— grouped by priority so principals understand urgency immediately

Counselor Dashboard

nav-counselor-before-after.png

Counselor Dashboard — before (left): behavioral data split across widgets with no urgency sorting / after (right): high-priority cases lead, cleaner layout reduces noise, stronger weekly trend visualization

BEFORE — WHAT USERS TOLD US WAS WRONG

  • Newly opened high-priority cases were not easy to spot — no urgency flagging

  • Early risk indicators scattered across multiple widgets requiring too much interpretation

  • No simple way to identify which students needed outreach since the last check

AFTER — WHAT THE REDESIGN DELIVERED

  • Newly opened cases displayed at top

— high-priority and self-harm-related cases immediately visible

  • Cleaner layout with fewer competing elements

— calm, focused interface that highlights action

  • Stronger behavior trend visualization

— clear week-by-week trend to spot shifts faster

N.O.R.A. — AI INTEGRATION

Navigate360's Optimized Response Assistant.

N.O.R.A. reduces noise and surfaces what matters most. Educators often struggle to find clear signals in the volume of daily data across attendance, behavior, curriculum, and safety tools. NORA turns scattered information into timely insight — highlighting meaningful change, recommending next steps, and helping teams identify students who may need support sooner.

Early Identification of Meaningful Change

Detects patterns easy to miss during a busy school day — sudden shifts in attendance, emerging behavior trends, changes in engagement, repeated early warning indicators.

"AI can help us understand what changed, not just what happened."

Clear, Actionable Summaries for Every Role

Summarizes charts, risk patterns, and trends in plain language aligned to each role. Principals, counselors, safety directors each receive insight relevant to their responsibilities — not generic analytics.

"Nora shows the why behind the data."

A Unified Lens Across Well-Being and Safety

Brings insights together across PBIS, behavior cases, attendance, digital threat detection, and curriculum progress — so teams see a connected story instead of isolated data points.

"One insight, not five different systems."

nav-nora-before-after.png

N.O.R.A. before (left): collapsed accordion showing a generic summary / after (right): role-specific insight anchored to the chart, with step-by-step reasoning and actionable patterns surfaced inline

"I use so many systems now. I am constantly switching between them to find basic information."

Userlytics Participant — Middle School Counselor

This quote grounded the NORA design brief: every AI feature needed to reduce this switching cost, not add new places to look.
