The Light Beside the Inn Door

The Ivy Lantern hangs beside the door of an old inn at the edge of the woods, so wrapped in ivy now that in summer you can barely find the iron beneath the leaves. It is nothing rare, just a lantern and a flame and a bit of glass. But the innkeeper lights it at dusk every single night, and on the wet ones especially, because a traveler caught out in the rain will see that small gold glow through the trees long before they see the inn itself. It has guided more cold and soaked and footsore wanderers to a dry bed than anyone has bothered to count. There are grander lights in Airistoll. There are none more welcome at the end of a long, rain-soaked road than the one that means warmth, and supper, and a door about to open.
